Former Urban League of Portland director Lawrence J. Dark died on Monday, June 28, 2010. Dark was the director of the Portland Urban League in the mid-to-late 1990s.
Dark's tenure as director was unfortunately marred by scandal. Dark purchased a house from a low-income housing nonprofit, despite making $95,000 a year. His income was nearly three times more than the income of qualified low-income tenants.
He is survived by his wife, Okianer Christian Dark; and son, Harrison E. Dark. He is also survived by his parents, Adrilla Howard and Charlie Dark; his grandmother, Mamie Scott; his three sisters, Chandra Dark, Angela Adams and Marsha Garvin and a host of many other relatives and friends. A viewing was being held Tuesday in Maryland. In lieu of flowers, please make a tax deductible contribution to The Lawrence J.
