PassinArt is pleased to introduce a new series, Play Reading Mondays, featuring the work of Javon Johnson and Vicki G. Hampton. "The Spanish Jade" by Javon Johnson is a fascinating theatrical menage trois of unlikely characters brought together by fate. Their hunger for acceptance, love, and equality is challenged by society, religion, and sexuality. “Charming yet deeply powerful and moving. 'The Spanish Jade' forces us to search for a deeper truth and equality for all, no matter race, age, affliction, or gender.”
"The Learning Curve" by Vickie G. Hampton is the story of Benjamin “Benny” Craft, a science teacher at Urban High School for nearly two decades. The work is demanding, in fact, all-consuming. Still, he has put his heart and soul into it because of his dedication to giving primarily African American students a leg up in a race where they already lag behind. Now, with his two daughters a few years from college, he is leaving Urban High for a higher-paying job with Privilege High, a private, predominately white school on the other side of town. Exhausted from teaching at Urban, he is looking forward to a less crowded environment, an abundance of supplies, and a student body that is more prepared for his rigorous teaching style. But Benjamin is in for an unexpected lesson – and a learning curve that throws him for a loop.
