The Skanner Foundation's The Wake of Vanport Screening and Discussion will air on television several times this month. The dates and times for the Comcast Xfinity channels are below.
The community was invited for a screening and presentation on Sunday, August 28 at Open Signal in Portland. The Skanner Foundation presented “The Wake of Vanport,” a series of short documentary films about the city of Vanport, a housing development created for Kaiser shipyard workers at the onset of World War II. The development — which included schools, community centers and day cares — housed the first large influx of African Americans to the Portland area, and was at one time Oregon’s second largest city.
The screening was following by a lively and heartfelt community discussion moderated by Bernie Foster, publisher of The Skanner News.
