Every year the Multnomah County Sheriff's office holds a huge Christmas party for students at the Community Transitional School.

This year, Captain Rai Adgers says, they decided to do something bigger: Build a basketball court.

Volunteers from the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office and many local businesses broke ground Tuesday morning for the new project, which they've planned since last year.

MCSO Court Services Captain Rai Adgers expects to complete the court by next week.

What's special about the Community Transitional School? All the students are homeless or living through poverty-related crisis situations.

"The children receiving services from the Community Transitional School live in homeless and domestic violence shelters, low-priced motels, or on the floor of a friend's home," says Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Steve Alexander.

"Some are from families that are on the brink of losing their housing, or are living in their cars. Some have just recently managed to move into permanent housing and all are in situations where poverty and uncertainty are dominant forces."

Contributing sponsors of the new sports court include: the Wood Village Lowe's, Bernhardt Industries Inc., Wieden + Kennedy Advertising, MCSO Corrections Deputies Association, MCSO Deputy Sheriff's Association, MCSO Management Association, Multnomah County Circuit Court Judges, The Rommel Architectural Partnership, Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co., Mt. Scott Fuel Co., and the Gateway and Wood Village Kohl's. In addition, Benyon Sports Company is fixing up the school's sports track surface.

The Community Transitional School located at 6601 NE Killingsworth St. For more information go to www.transitionalschool.org .
