Photos: Greenpeace Brings Rainbow Warrior to Northwest to Warn About Impact of Coal

Greenpeace sailed the Rainbow Warrior into harbor at Vancouver, Wash., last week as part of a West Coast tour that aims to bring attention to the impact of climate change and pollution on our environment.

Plans to ship millions of tons of coal to markets in China and the South Pacific could result in damage to air and water quality in Oregon and Washington. Burning coal and other fossil fuels threatens to speed up climate change and the dangers that go with it, said Kelly Mitchell, climate and energy campaigner for the environmental nonprofit.

The ship is the third Rainbow Warrior. The first ship was bombed by the French Secret Service. The second ship served for many years and is now a hospital in Bangladesh.

The current Rainbow Warrior was custom built for Greenpeace. It has two tripartite masts and numerous energy saving and green features. The bridge has more than 300 buttons that operate everything from the speed to ensuring all windows and doors are closed and watertight. It is home to 16 people who operate it and it can also carry another 16 people.

The ship's motto?     "You can't sink a rainbow."
